Scott K. Robertson, CPA - Partner

Scott Robertson received his bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of California at Santa Barbara and earned his CPA license in 1986. He has been an active member of the Nevada County business community since first establishing the firm in 1988. As an advisor and accountant with more than 20 years' experience, Scott has worked with countless area businesses to help them find ways to grow in size and strength. His motivational approach to business consulting, combined with knowledge of accounting practices and tax law, provides clients with a fresh look at their business systems and operations. Experience in the construction, distribution, mining, manufacturing, retail, title and escrow, medical, and legal industries makes Scott a perceptive advisor to small and medium size businesses.

Scott is very involved in the community which includes serving as past chairman of the Nevada County Economic Resource Council, current member and past president of the Grass Valley Rotary, member of the Gold Country Estate Planning Council, and past member of Big Brothers/ Big Sisters. Scott also taught at Sierra College Nevada County campus for 12 years.

While not at the office, Scott enjoys spending time with his wife Debra on their houseboat at Bullard's Bar.

 

John R. Woodford, CPA - Partner

John earned his bachelor's degree in finance from California State University at Long Beach and his Masters degree in taxation from Golden Gate University. He received his CPA license in 1973. In 1987, he was recognized by Money magazine as one of the top tax advisors in Los Angeles. He moved to Nevada County in 1988, and in 1992, he joined with Scott Robertson to form what is known today as Robertson, Woodford, and Summers. John is the firm's chief expert in tax and estate planning, specializing in all areas of tax planning and compliance for individuals, corporations, partnerships, estates, and trusts. He also has primary responsibility for the firm's trust administration practice. John enjoys serving as an advocate for clients before tax authorities and is particularly skilled at IRS problem resolution. His areas of specialization include trust administration, closely held businesses, and high net worth individuals.

John is a member of the California Society of CPA's Committee on Taxation and serves as chair of its State Subcommittee. Also he is the CPA Member of the California Franchise Tax Board's Advisory Board, a member and Past Chair of the California Society of CPA's Estate Planning Committee, and past president and board member of the Rotary Club of Nevada City.

John enjoys playing soccer, running, cooking, and spending time with his wife Janna and their Scotties, Rudy and Sadie. He is also a huge fan of Manchester United FC and involved in youth soccer as a coach, referee, and tournament volunteer.

 

Douglas T. Summers, CPA - Partner

After graduating in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting, Doug joined the Los Angeles office of the international accounting firm Peat Marwick Mitchell LLP. During his tenure there he specialized in tax compliance and consulting engagements in the firms Middle Market and High Net Worth individual practices. In 1989 Doug transferred to the Sacramento office of what is now KPMG. During this time he specialized in the tax issues of real estate developers, large retailers, personal financial planning and tax compliance of high net worth individuals as well as extensive experience with complex tax and planning in the estate, trust and generation skipping tax areas. In 2005 Doug left KPMG as a Senior Tax Manager and joined Robertson & Woodford as a partner where he enjoys working closely with his clients on their tax and accounting compliance and consulting issues.

Doug is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the California State Society of CPA's. Doug currently serves as Treasurer of the Gold Country Estate Planning Council and has served in that same capacity with the Auburn Daybreak Rotary.

When he is not in the office Doug enjoys spending time with his family as well as trying to keep in shape at spin classes and working outdoors.

 

 Suzanne Chapel, CPA - Staff Accountant

Suzanne Chapel has been with RWS for 11 years. She specializes in individual and corporate tax returns, and assists clients with accounting issues and special projects. She is also a certified QuickBooks Pro Advisor. Suzanne graduated with her BA from California State University, Fresno and finished her accounting classes at California State University, Sacramento. She received her CPA license in 2000. Before working with RWS, she worked at an accounting firm in the area and as a controller for a local wood products manufacturer.

In her spare time, Suzanne enjoys fishing with her husband Mike, yard sale shopping with her girlfriends, following the San Francisco Giants, and spending time with her sons Chris and Darren and dogs Spencer and Shadow.

 

Greg Brooding - Staff Accountant

Greg earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from California State University, Sacramento. He gained his small business accounting experience working in the Napa Valley before joining the staff at RWS in December of 1994. His expertise now includes tax planning and consulting, as well as preparing and reviewing income tax returns for individuals, small businesses, fiduciaries, corporations, and partnerships.

Outside of work, Greg enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids, hunting and fishing, and watching high school baseball. Greg is also involved in two non profit organizations in the community. He has been the treasurer for the Pleasant Ridge Union School District Parents Club for the past 11 years, and also formed the Bear River High School Baseball Booster Club in 2008, of which he is the current president.

 

Emily Konrad - Staff Accountant

Emily Konrad graduated from Liberty University in VA with her Bachelor's and Masters degrees in Accounting. She just completed her second tax season at RWS. Emily's primary responsibilities include preparing individual tax returns and working with clients to complete accounting and bookkeeping projects. She is also working on her CPA exam, which will hopefully be completed by the end of the year.

In her free time, Emily spends as much time as possible with her family and friends, and enjoys playing the piano and working on her 1968 Ford Mustangs.

 

Crystal Bouchard - Office Manager

Starting with the firm only 5 months after its inception, Crystal Bouchard has worked at RWS since February of 1993. Previous to working at RWS, she was the customer service manager at a large medical device manufacturer. Starting as the receptionist at RWS, she quickly worked her way up to office manager, learning every aspect of the firm's inner workings and is now often referred to as "the glue that holds it all together."

Outside of work she is a loving mother of three and has been married for over 20 years. She and her family like to go camping and ride dirt bikes in the northern Nevada desert, and help out at their church by overseeing or helping in many of the church's charitable works.

 

Betsy Healing - Practice Administrator/ Receptionist

Betsy Healing has been with RWS since October of 2007 and is usually the first person you see when you come to our office. She has worked at several local businesses and nonprofit organizations, acting as receptionist and office manager. At RWS, she has a wide variety of responsibilities, including all initial client interaction, tax return and financial statement assembly, and client payroll accounts.

While not at the office, Betsy is a strength training instructor. She also enjoys spending time with her husband Doug, and their two grown children and their spouses.

 

Sandy Hakala, CPA

Sandy Hakala received her Bachelors and MBA from Santa Clara University, and received her CPA license in both CA and MN.  She worked for KPMG in San Jose in the auditing department and in the systems consulting group before moving to Minnesota, where she worked for a regional firm for 9 years.  When she moved back to California, she led the Manufacturing Systems practice for a Microsoft Reseller.  She now works for clients who need accounting, cost accounting, and systems assistance.  Sandy is a two-time member of the AICPA Technology Conference Committee, prior chair of MNCPA Information Technology Committee, and member of MNCPA Vision Committee. She is on the finance council for St. Canice Church and was also treasurer and president of the Parent’s Club at Mt. St. Mary’s academy.

Sandy and her husband Tom spend most of their time taking their two kids, Ron and Jenny to their Football and Basketball practices and games, but in their spare time they like to go golfing and fishing.
